Bridge of Sighs
Located in Venice, Italy, the Bridge of Sighs (Ponte dei Sospiri) spans the Rio di Palazzo connecting the interrogation rooms of the Palazzo Ducale di Venezia to the prison. Constructed of limestone the enclosed bridge was built in 1602. Lord Byron gave the bridge its name in the 19th century based on the notion that condemned prisoners would sigh upon their last view of Venice as they were lead to their cells to await execution. However, by the time the bridge was built the prison was largely occupied by small-time criminals.
Ponte Vecchio
Located in Florence, Italy (Firenze, Italia), the Ponte Vecchio spans the Arno River. Built and destroyed several times, it was last rebuilt in 1345. The Ponte Vecchio is notable for still having shops along it.
Khaju Bridge
Built around 1650, the Khaju bridge spans the Zayandeh River in the city of Esfahan. In addition to providing access across the river, the bridge is also used to control the water flow of the river.
Kintai Bridge
The Kintai bridge spans the Nishiki River in Iwakuni. The original bridge, built in the 17th century, was destroyed by a typhoon in 1950 and rebuilt in 1953.
Sydney Harbour Bridge
Opened in March 1932 the Syndey Harbour bridge spans the Syndey Harbour. Nicknamed "the Coathanger" the bridge connects Sidney and North Sydney.
Stari Most
The Stari Most (The Old Bridge) is located in the city of Moster and spans the Neretva river. Originally built in the 16th century, the bridge was destroyed in 1993 during the Bosnian war. Reconstruction of the bridge in June 2001 and was opened in July 2004
Pulteney Bridge
The Pulteney Bridge spans the Avon River in Bath, England. Completed in 1779, it has shops along the entire length of both sides.
Blue Water Bridge
The Blue Water Bridge spans the St. Clair River connecting Sarnia, Ontario, Canada and Port Huron, Michigan, USA. The bridge is actually comprised of two separate spans, the westbound (truss) span opened in October 1938, while the eastbound (arch) span opened in July 1997.
Ponte di Pietra
The Ponte di Pietra spans the Adige river in Verona. Originally built in 100 BC, 4 of the 5 spans were rebuilt with original materials in 1957 after being destroyed during World War II.
Ponte di Rialto
The Ponte di Rialto spans the Grand Canal in Venice. Completed in 1591, it is the oldest bridge crossing the canal.
